Job Description: 

Duties include (but are not limited to):
• Screening and quantification of licit and illicit drugs in biological specimens from postmortem, impaired driving, and drug-facilitated crimes cases according to laboratory procedure and best practices
• Technical review of data for quality and accuracy according to established toxicological principles
• Accurate casework reporting
• Method development/validation as necessary; writing/update of SOPs
• General laboratory maintenance responsibilities
• Courtroom testimony as an expert witness

Minimum Civil Service Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a biology, chemistry, clinical chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, medical technology, or forensic science field plus two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in analytical or forensic toxicology, or analytical chemistry; OR,

(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree AND a Master’s degree in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above; OR,

(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B)

• Excellent attention to detail
• Knowledge of basic laboratory practices; ability to follow SOPs
• Ability to work independently and efficiently, set priorities
• Ability to work well with other employees at all levels, and coordinate as necessary
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Knowledge of laboratory safety

Strongly Preferred:
• Experience with immunoassay, GC/FID, GC/MS, HPLC, LC/MS, LC/MS/MS, and LC/QTOF, especially for analysis of alcohol/drugs from biological specimens
• Experience in an accredited forensic toxicology laboratory
• Training in toxicological principles and the effects of drugs/alcohol on human performance
• Knowledge of quality control and accreditation procedures as they pertain to forensic toxicology
• Method development and validation skills

Candidates for employment with Monroe County Government will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, along with a background investigation. Failure to meet the standards may result in disqualification.
If appointed, candidate will be required to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State or otherwise demonstrate capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Applicant must be a resident of Monroe County at the time of appointment (starting date) and for at least four (4) months at the time of the next Civil Service examination.
