The need to detect and identify novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in forensic toxicology has been well-established, as the prevalence of these compounds has increased over time. NPS encompass several different drug classes and individual compounds within those classes change over time as their popularity rises and falls due to scheduling and other factors. This can be particularly challenging for forensic toxicology laboratories as the appearance of NPS can outpace the availability of reference materials and the adoption of new instrumentation and methodologies for their detection. In this joint webinar presented by the SOFT NPS and AAT committees, the utility of various types of instrumentation for the detection of NPS will be discussed, from immunoassay and GC-MS to orbitrap/ion trap and TOF/QTOF. Ultimately webinar participants will have a better understanding of how their laboratory can accomplish NPS detection using the resources they currently have and will be better prepared to justify future instrument purchases for NPS detection when necessary.
Learning Objectives
- Determine how the instrumentation you currently have can help you detect different classes of NPS.

- Gather information for future instrument purchases in relation to NPS detection.

- Learn workflows of different labs for various instruments and NPS.
