The SOFT Professional Mentoring Program brings members together for a guided, year-long mentoring partnership. Whether you are entering forensic toxicology, navigating a career transition, developing leadership skills, or looking to give back, the program offers opportunities to learn from and support one another.

Who Can Participate?

SOFT members at all career stages are encouraged to participate as a mentor, mentee, or both.

Mentors are needed at every career level. An early-career toxicologist can help a student navigate the transition into the profession, while a mid-career professional can guide someone beginning their career. You do not need decades of experience to have something valuable to share.

• Mentors share their experience, offer guidance, and support a colleague’s professional growth.

• Mentees identify goals, ask questions, and bring a willingness to learn.

• Both: Share your expertise with one colleague while receiving guidance from another.

SOFT membership is required. Individuals with a pending SOFT membership application may also participate.

What Does Participation Involve?

The Professional Mentoring Program Committee matches participants based on their interests, experience, and goals. Each pair completes a mentoring agreement to establish goals, expectations, and a communication schedule.

Most pairs meet about once a month by phone or video, with the flexibility to choose a schedule that works for both participants. Conversations may focus on career planning, technical skills, research, leadership, management, work-life balance, or other areas relevant to the pair.

The committee provides kickoff materials, resources, and professional development activities throughout the year, along with support for participants. Participants also provide feedback to help improve the program.

When Can I Sign Up?

Registration takes place November 15–December 15 for the following year’s program. Pairings are announced in February.
